Student Mentoring

Student Mentoring

With our extensive experience in academic environments we are perfectly positioned to guide, mentor and coach students undergoing their most demanding tasks, such as their final year projects and dissertations, from undergraduate level all the way up to PhD.

Project & Dissertation Guidance

The final and most involving part of any academic qualification is the project or dissertation. This is the largest piece of work that must be done and is where the student shows their capabilities and skills both with regards to applying what they have learnt during their studies as well as their ability to learn what is needed to complete the work.

The project / dissertation is highly involving and if approached strategically and in a progressive manner it can be a very enjoyable and rewarding experience. One of the most important elements is the guidance from an expert supervisor and this is what we can provide you with at Efixis in order to enhance your learning experience.

Whether at BSc / BEng, MSc / MEng / MPhil or PhD level, we have the experience to guide you in an effective and efficient way towards your destination.

Undergraduate (BSc / BEng)

Focus:
During the final year project, a student must understand the problem they are working on, define its boundaries, investigate possible solutions, work on the most probable solution, establish the effectiveness of that solution, present the whole work done in writing, verbally and in action. All tasks must be planned, scheduled and executed effectively.

At the university, supervision is usually performed in small groups or one-to-one with the assigned supervisor where progress and issues are discussed. Our experts at Efixis are available to provide further guidance and supervision.

Package includes:
• Maximum of 6 supervisory sessions (30 minutes each);
• Ensure clear understanding of the project topic;
• Advise on the overall planning process and requirements;
• Guide on aims, objectives, methodology and deliverables;
• Review and advise on the project proposal;
• Discuss development of solutions and results expected;
• Review and advise on analysis of results obtained;
• Discuss project summary, conclusions and future work;
• Discuss structure of final report;
• Review draft project report and offer suggestions for improvement.

Postgraduate (MSc / MEng / MPhil)

Focus:
The postgraduate project follows a similar structure as the undergraduate one but demands a much higher academic involvement. Again, the student must understand the problem they are working on, define its boundaries, investigate possible solutions, work on the most probable solution, establish the effectiveness of that solution, present the whole work done in writing, verbally and in action with all tasks being planned, scheduled and executed effectively. However, the student is expected to dig much deeper into the realms of the project and provide a much higher level of involvement and understanding of the whole process.

At the university, supervision is usually performed in small groups or one-to-one with the assigned supervisor where progress and issues are discussed. Our experts at Efixis are available to provide further guidance and supervision.

Package includes:
• Maximum of 6 supervisory sessions (30 minutes each);

Research (PhD)

Focus:
Undertaking a PhD project via scientific research is a journey whose goal is to push the boundaries of knowledge and science. Work is being done where it has not been done before and as such there is no way of knowing what the outcome will be unless the person undertaking this work plans accordingly and does theoretical work in order to predict what the outcome may be. Even so, this does not mean that in every case the experimental results will prove that the theory was right. They may prove that the theory was not adequate to predict the experimental outcome or that the equipment and knowledge available at that moment in time might not be in a position to prove whatever the theoretical analysis was suggesting. Either way, undertaking a research project is an exciting but very demanding journey and one can be sure they will not be the same person they were at the start of this journey.

At the university, a research student will be allocated a supervisory team and supervision will be taking place mainly with the supervisor who is a subject matter expert and supported by the second supervisor who may be an expert Professor overseeing the process or a new research supervisor developing their research experience.

Our experts at Efixis have supervised several PhD students to successful completion and are available to provide further guidance and supervision.

Package includes:
• Maximum of 10 supervisory sessions (45 minutes each);
• Ensure clear understanding of the project topic;
• Advise on the overall planning process and requirements;
• Guide on aims, objectives, methodology and deliverables;
• Review and advise on the research proposal;
• Advise and review background research;
• Advise and review progress reports;
• Advise on theoretical considerations;
• Discuss development of solutions and results expected;
• Advise on and review the transfer report (from MPhil to PhD);
• Review and advise on analysis of results obtained;
• Discuss project summary, conclusions and future work;
• Discuss structure of PhD report;
• Review draft project report and offer suggestions for improvement;
• Advise on Viva Voce Examination.

Academic Editing & Proofreading

Essays, Assignments & Courseworks

When submitting your work, you want to be sure that it is polished to reflect the hard work that you have put in. It is also a proven fact that, even though in most cases this may not be a part of the marking scheme, beautifully presented documents, without any grammatical errors and with logical flow in the presentation of information, gain a higher score when compared to those reports where due care and attention to these important factors was not paid.

This service includes:
• Proofreading: correction of spelling, punctuation and grammatical mistakes, and checking of references;
• Editing: improving intelligibility, ensuring writing flows as it should and appropriate tone is employed;
• Formatting: cover sheet, page numbering, consistent margins, headers and footers, table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, and table of references.

Notes:
• A report of 1,500-2,500 words will require approximately 1 hour's work on this package;
• Paraphrasing will be kept to the minimum level to ensure the work is a true reflection of the student's effort.

BSc & MSc Project Reports

The Bachelor's Final Year or Master's Project Report is the culmination of your studies! This is where you will apply all the knowledge and skills that you have learnt and gained during your course of studies and build them up even more based on the requirements of the direction of the theme or topic that you have chosen. Other than the academic work that you will put in you must also ensure that the report is presented beautifully, without any grammatical errors and with logical flow in the presentation of information to ensure your work shines through and impresses the reader.

This service includes:
• Proofreading: correction of spelling, punctuation and grammatical mistakes, and checking of references;
• Editing: improving intelligibility, ensuring writing flows as it should and appropriate tone is employed;
• Formatting: cover sheet, page numbering, consistent margins, headers and footers, table of contents, list of figures, list of tables, and table of references.

Notes:
• A report of 4,000-5,000 words will require approximately 2 hours' work on this package;
• Paraphrasing will be kept to the minimum level to ensure the work is a true reflection of the student's effort.

Scientific Articles

Scientific Articles / Papers are used for the sharing of original research work with other scientists as well as for reviewing the research conducted by others. Their intention is to inform and so they must be highly readable, clear, accurate and concise. Other scientists use the knowledge reported to build their own research upon.

Prior to it being published, a Scientific Article is peer reviewed by expert referees who help the journal editor decide if one is suitable for publication, requires improvements, or should be rejected. It is not uncommon for Scientific Articles to be rejected purely on the grounds of being badly written even though the research itself may be publishable. Once published, the Scientific Article will be read by other scientists who may be more or less knowledgeable about the topic reported.

Scientific Articles are usually structured in the following way:
• Abstract: summarises the major aspects of the research presented;
• Introduction: clarifies the motivation behind the work presented and introduces the article structure;
• Materials and Methodology: to enable the reproduction of the experiments presented in the article by other scientists;
• Results obtained: presents research results obtained;
• Discussion: discusses research results obtained;
• Conclusions: briefly summarises on the work done, highlights outcomes and relates them with the motivation;
• List of References: other research reported upon which this research is built;
• Appendix (optional).

Scientific Articles - Translating to English

The vast majority of scientific articles published in journals and conference proceedings are written in the English language. Scientists who want to produce influential and globally recognised work need to publish in English to ensure the widest readership. Articles written in any other language are destined to received a limited audience.

The fact is that around 80% of all scientific journals are published in English. These journals also insist that any articles submitted go through a peer review process which not only evaluates the quality of the research submitted for publication but also confirms that the level of English language is of high enough standard to ensure the article is easily read, understood as intended, and appreciated by other scientists.

The language itself should not be a barrier to publishing good quality research. Our translators and scientists at Efixis are available to ensure that your scientific article has the highest chance of being accepted for publication. We have been peer-reviewing scientific articles for many years as academics and researchers.

The languages that we can translate scientific articles to English are:
• Chinese;
• Greek;
• Russian;
• Translation from other languages can be arranged - please contact us to confirm.

All scientific articles translated to English will also be proofread by our scientists to ensure clarity and accuracy.
